Lyrics Writers notes

How will I do it?
Can I find it inside me?
Told there’s nothing to it
In my sights, all I can see

Will I take the life from him
Keep him from being saved
Do I have it within
Pull my trigger, send amen the grave

Free me from this task
Free me from this task
I’m not meant to kill
Give me what I ask

Wars we can’t see rage like the storm
Are we merrily fighting man
Hungry for power, evil was born
The army’s of God take their stand

So I ask do I do it
Do I set this spirit free
Send him to heaven or hell
Why is the choice up to me

Free me from this task
Free me from this task
I’m not meant to kill
Give me what I ask

Will I lose my salvation
Take another man’s life
Put here in the position
Cause his widow strife

My spirit longs for mercy
Can’t count how many have died
Would have given him the chance to see
How many tears have cried

Free me from this task
Free me from this task
I’m not meant to kill
Give what I ask

I thought this was an interesting dilemma. Here is a person of Christian faith who is in the military and signed up full well knowing the consequences of maybe going to war. What enters a person’s mind when they know that they have to take another persons life? You know that you signed up to do a certain job, but you might not really think about it until it comes down to crunch time. Will I take away his salvation because I killed him before he could make things right with God? Will I lose my salvation because I took another mans life? To the mature Christian, we know that we would not lose our salvation for having to kill in wartime situations. If it were I, the thought would probably cross my mind. Fortunately I know what God’s word says and I know that I can trust his word. Still the fact remains, it would be difficult to take another mans life. I myself would not like to be in that situation, but sometimes you have to do things you don’t like to do.
